Intel Core Ultra Series New Socket LGA1851 Cooler Options

2024-10-15

LGA1851 is Intel's new socket interface for its Intel Core Ultra series processors.LGA (Land Grid Array) is a surface mount technology used to connect the processor to the motherboard.LGA1851 inherits many of the benefits of its predecessor sockets, such as the LGA1700, but makes technology improvements. LGA1851 The main change in the LGA1851 from its predecessor is an increase in the number of pins, from 1700 pins in the LGA1700 to 1851 pins. These pin increases are primarily to support higher power consumption and more powerful features such as support for more PCIe lanes, higher frequency memory, and more advanced power management systems. Motherboards of the LGA1851 socket utilize the Intel 800 series chipset (Z890).

Basic LGA1851 Processor Information

The processors currently using the LGA1851 socket are the Core Ultra processor 1 series (aka Meteor Lake) and Core Ultra processor 2 series (Intel Core Ultra 200 series processors aka Arrow Lake). Here is some basic information about these processors:

Meteor Lake:

Core Architecture: utilizes Intel's new hybrid architecture that includes a High Performance Core (P-Core) and an Efficient Core (E-Core).

Memory Support: DDR5 and LPDDR5X with support for higher frequencies and greater bandwidth.

PCIe lanes: PCIe 5.0 support for enhanced data transfer capabilities.

TDP (Thermal Design Power): 35W, 65W and 125W versions, categorized into low-power and high-performance models depending on the CPU model.

Arrow Lake:

Core Architecture: Utilizes Intel's new hybrid architecture that includes a high-performance core (P-Core) and a high-efficiency core (E-Core).

Memory Support: Similar to Meteor Lake, continues to support DDR5 and LPDDR5X.

PCle Channel: Supports PCIe 5.0 for enhanced data transfer capabilities.

TDP: Ranges from 35W to 125W depending on the model, suiting the needs of the mainstream consumer to enthusiast market.

Coolers for LGA1851

The form factor of the LGA1851 is more similar to the LGA1700, and although the number of pins has increased, the mounting hole spacing of the cooler is expected to remain the same. This means that most LGA1700 coolers will be compatible with the LGA1851, however, with the new generation of processors that consume more power, especially the higher end models that may have a TDP of 125W or more, the need for heat sinking will increase accordingly. Therefore, users should still consider upgrading to a more efficient cooling system, especially for those who wish to run their processors under extreme conditions. Below are the Lori's coolers for the different Intel LGA1851 processor:
