When talking about graphics cards, you will always come across two words TGP and TDP, which are just one letter apart but have different meanings.
TGP is Total Graphics Power, a concept developed by NVIDIA to represent the overall power consumption of a graphics card, including the sum of the power consumption of the GPU core, memory, and other related circuits.
TGP was developed to help users better understand the actual power consumption of a graphics card under high load. For example, if you see a graphics card with a TGP of 250W, then theoretically the card will not consume more than 250W of maximum power when running large games or performing intense rendering tasks.
TDP, or Thermal Design Power, is a metric provided by chip manufacturers to indicate the maximum cooling requirements of a CPU or graphics card when operating at full load. In other words, in today's world, TDP often refers to the maximum amount of heat generated by a hardware device such as a CPU or GPU under worst-case (full load/full power) conditions.
For example, a graphics card with a TDP of 150W means that in the most extreme cases, the card will theoretically not generate more than 150W of heat, so the cooling system will need to ensure 150W of heat dissipation in order to ensure that the hardware continues to operate properly.
In fact, this value can also be directly used as a reference for purchasing a CPU cooler, many coolers will be labeled with TDP in the product description, and when choosing a cooler, the number of heat dissipation capacity is greater than the TDP is the bottom line.
- TGP focuses more on the overall power performance of the graphics card, while TDP focuses on the cooling needs of the hardware device;
- TGP tells you how many watts of power the card needs to support its operation, while TDP says how much heat the card will give off under full load, which can be used to choose the right cooling solution;
- Only the graphics card has the concept of TGP, while both the CPU and graphics card have the concept of TDP.
